The Black Wealth Gap: What the Fed's Newest Numbers Say

The 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, in plain numbers, and what a family can do with them.

The Black wealth gap got worse in the newest federal numbers. In the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, the typical white family held about nine times the wealth of the typical Black family.

The numbers

These are medians, the family in the exact middle, from the Fed's own tables. Net worth means everything a family owns minus everything it owes. All figures are in 2025 dollars.

Family201920222025
Black$30,600$49,100$36,800
Hispanic or Latino$45,900$67,400$79,600
White$238,700$311,900$332,100
All families$154,400$211,100$215,900

What changed

  • The typical Black family lost about a quarter of its wealth in three years, falling from $49,100 to $36,800. The Fed's report says this break stands in contrast to the rises seen since 2013.
  • The typical white family gained, going from $311,900 to $332,100.
  • The gap between them is now about $295,300. In 2022 it was about $262,800.
  • Median net worth rose for every other group the Fed reports by race or ethnicity, so this fall was not shared.

The middle tells a different story from the average. Mean Black net worth rose to about $242,400 from $231,400 while the family in the middle lost ground, which is why we use the median.

What the numbers do not say

The survey shows what happened. It does not, on its own, prove why. Be careful with anyone who gives you one cause with no receipt.

Where wealth comes from

The Fed's report shows the typical homeowner with $458,900 in net worth and the typical renter with $10,600. Owning things is the plain place to start, and our own guides cover the main ones:

Building wealth in the Black community

The moves that last are not secret. Spend less than you bring in. Own instead of rent when the numbers work. Keep money in insured accounts while you save. Write a will so that what you build reaches your children, and teach them how it was built. One family does not close this gap. A family that does these things still changes its own numbers.
